How Can We Help?

Fire Exit Door Installation Video

If you’re looking to enhance the safety and security of your commercial property, this step-by-step guide is a must-watch. Learn how to install one of our top-quality steel security fire exit doors with ease.

Take appropriate safety precautions before beginning installation. Consider your surroundings and wear PPE if required. We would recommend a minimum of two people to install, so if possible, have another pair of hands available to help. For this installation, you will require the following tools (see video).

We recommend using our wind-out lugs to aid the installation of your door as an alternative to fitting shims to secure your door in the aperture. Our fixing kits include everything you need to install your door into a masonry, wood or metal aperture. Whilst unpacking your door, locate the box of compulsory items included with your door. These will include the door seal, frame caps and stickers if purchased. Before installing, check that your aperture measurements are suitable for the door. Open your door by pushing the push bar. When fitting the door, you can either use a windbag to hold the door leaf in place or remove the door leaf and just fit the frame into place. Screw the wind-out lugs into the fixing points on the exterior of the frame. Position the frame in the opening. If our stock door size isn’t perfectly suited to your opening, infill panels are available to bridge the gap. For more information, see our how-to video on infill panels or visit our website.

Use the included Allen key to secure the frame to the door aperture. Check that the frame is sitting plumb horizontally and vertically using a spirit level across the threshold. Use fitting shims to lift up either side of the frame if necessary. Using the fixing plate holes as guides to fix your door in place, our fixing kit includes masonry, wood and metal fixings. If fitting into a brick wall, use the wall plugs and fixings provided. If fitting into wood or metal, pilot drill holes for the fixings, and then screw in leaving a bit of play. Check that the frame is still plumb vertically on the hinge side, and fully tighten the fixings.

If you remove the door leaf, you can now refit it. Position the leaf so that the hinges line up with the frame, and fix a single screw into each of the hinges to hold it in place. You can then fit the rest of the remaining screws. If needed, you can also use a windbag to help position the door Leaf before refitting. Close the leaf gently, and check that the Gap around the door is equal. The door should close without needing to be forced. Reopen the door, and turn your attention to the frame on the latching side. If the door can close easily, you can drill and fix this side into place. If the door can’t close easily, the frame will need adjusting using the wind-out lugs. Checking again with a spirit level. The kit also comes with hinge packers, which are available for use if required.

It may be that the shoot bolts need adjusting, which can be made longer or shorter by screwing and unscrewing them.

Included with your door set will be two types of black seal: one thick and one thin. Apply the thick seal to the door frame, and the thin seal to the door leaf around the full perimeter of the anti-jemmy bar lip. Don’t apply any to the threshold, as the thin seal applied to the bottom of the door Leaf will create a seal here. For CE compliance, you must test that the door opens and closes without unnecessary force. This must also be repeated monthly as per the ONM manual. Insert the dog bolt C apps into the appropriate fixing holes, and fill the remaining holes with the rubber grommets and AIX all door signage. If your door has a door closer fitted, you can now reattach the arm and test the closing of the door. Our security trim kit is recommended with all security installations to protect the fixings from attack, but also as a quick and easy way to finish your door, or you can finish with a silicone sealant.

For further instructions on installing a security trim, please see our separate installation video.

If you also wish to use your Latham’s fire exit door as an entrance, you will need to install a compatible Exidor Outer Access Device (OAD).
